To keep James Cameron’s Aliens titling tradition alive, a sequel to Twister, dubbed Twisters, is currently in the works, according to a new report from Deadline.

The script was penned by The Revenant screenwriter Mark L. Smith and producer Steven Spielberg is said to have loved it, leading to the film’s development being sped up. Spielberg is involved in the image through his company Amblin. The producers are currently looking for a director for the film. Top Gun: Maverick director Joseph Kosinski was previously in the role but left for another picture with Brad Pitt.

Original Twister director Jan De Bont is still around, but sadly he hasn’t made a film since 2003’s Lara Croft Tom Raider: The Cradle of Life that Box Office Mojo says has disappointed at the box office. Another option that is sadly no longer available is Bill Paxton, the lead actor of Twister. As well as opening up about his excitement for a sequel in interviews, the late actor also debuted a 3D version himself via Empire Online in 2010. Paxton’s feature film directing credits include Frailty and The Greatest Game Ever Played.

Among those currently being considered for the directing position are Prey director Dan Trachtenberg, Free Solo directors Jimmy Chin & Elizabeth Chai Vaserhelyi and Kubo and the Two Strings, according to Deadline’s exclusive report -director Travis Knight. However, Trachtenberg has already announced that he is not in the running for the job Twitter.
