It’s pretty hard to miss Garrett Morris in 2 Broke Girls. Throughout the series, he plays Earl Washington, a mainstay of the Williamsburg diner since the 1960s. Despite being in his 80s when the show begins, he is sharp-witted, witty and willing to go against anyone for his friends, as evidenced in Season 1 Episode 5, “And the 90s Horse Party” when he did a Baseball bat takes to the counter to disperse a group of unwanted customers (via YouTube).
In a way, Morris’ role in 2 Broke Girls mirrored his real-life career. In the CBS comedy, he took on the role of “old guy” and established actor in one fell swoop with his performance as Earl. The “well-established” part of this equation comes from him cutting his TV teeth on “Saturday Night Live.” He’s just a former cast member — he’s a former member of the original cast (via Brittanica). When the sketch show first aired in 1975, he was on it, starring with Dan Aykroyd, John Belushi, Chevy Chase, Jane Curtin, Laraine Newman and Gilda Radner. According to his IMDb profile, he stayed with SNL until 1980.
IMDb reminds us that Morris appeared on popular TV shows over the next decade, including 1982’s Diff’rent Strokes, 1983-84’s The Jeffersons, Murder She Wrote, and im Hill Street Blues Year 1985. and “Who’s the Boss?” in 1988. He went through the 1990s, including roles on The Jamie Foxx Show from 1996 to 2001.
