Loosely based on the television series of the same name created by Stephen J. Cannell and Patrick Hasburgh in the late ’80s, 21 Jump Street stands out in the genre for its almost total focus on comedy. Written by Jonah Hill and Michael Bacall, Hill and Channing Tatum play two cops who are sent to their old high school to go undercover to find the purveyor of a new drug that’s growing in popularity among the students.

As with “Bad Boys,” the focus is largely on the relationship between the two main characters, Morton Schmidt and Greg Jenko. Hill and Tatum bring two very different personalities to the leads who, despite their differences, manage to get along well and form an effective partnership. Most of the humor comes from the conflict in looks and demeanor between the two, creating a classic double act and carrying the film effortlessly.

“21 Jump Street” was a financial success, grossing $200 million according to Box Office Mojo, and was a hit with critics. Most reviewers agreed that the film managed to combine great jokes with a good dose of ’80s nostalgia in a way that didn’t come across as over the top or cheesy. Since then there has been a successful sequel in the form of 22 Jump Street, as well as plans (which may or may not materialize) for a Men in Black crossover and a female-led spin-off.
