Will Ferrell To Star In New Comedy Blockbuster As Ronald Reagan (VIDEO)

What the film's writers are planning on doing has Republicans pissed!

Ronald Reagan began his career starring in silly Hollywood comedies, so it only seems natural that Hollywood would return the favor and produce a silly comedy about the actor turned Republican god. The funny thing, though, is that Republicans aren’t at all amused that Will Ferrell has been cast to play the former President, but not during his glory days. It will be a comedy about Reagan’s dementia.

Sources tell Variety Ferrell is attached to star as President Ronald Reagan in the Black List script “Reagan.”

Penned by Mike Rosolio, the story begins at the start of the ex-president’s second term when he falls into dementia and an ambitious intern is tasked with convincing the commander in chief that he is an actor playing the president in a movie.

The script was so popular following its announcement on the Black List, an annual catalog of the top unproduced scripts in Hollywood, that a live read was done recently done in March starring Lena Dunham and John Cho.

To be fair, we don’t know for sure that the movie is set to be a comedy.

“Reagan,” written by Mike Rosolio, is a fictitious take on the behind-the-scenes struggles of a president struggling with dementia. According to the script’s logline, “When Ronald Reagan falls into dementia at the start of his second term, an ambitious intern is tasked with convincing the commander in chief that he is an actor playing the president in a movie.” There’s no indication of whether this film is a comedy or not, but the film’s sure to produce some big controversy if it makes it to the big screen. (Other Black List scripts you may have heard of? “The Hunger Games.”) From the one-sentence summary the film sounds like a mash up of the actor-as-president meme in “Dave,” the uphill climb of Jonah Hill’s character in “Get Him to the Greek” and perhaps even the sentimentality of “The Notebook.”

Except, well, it stars a comedian and it has been billed as a “hilarious political satire.”

It’s not the first time the entertainment industry has made fun of Reagan’s now infamous dementia that took hold during his second term. Saturday Night Live did this hilarious spoof on the former President years ago:

When it comes to Reagan, Republicans don’t have much of a sense of humor, despite the fact that Reagan was known for his own ability to laugh at himself.

Some can’t miss an opportunity to be racist:

To be fair, a lot of people are objecting to the subject matter rather than the subject. Many feel uncomfortable with the fact that the movie could poke fun of Alzheimers.

Very few people know how the script will go, but Ferrell, who supports Bernie Sanders, is famous for irreverent comedy. He hilariously played George W. Bush on Saturday Night Live for years.
