President Trump has called Michael Flynn a “wonderful” man and argued for his exoneration, even telling then-FBI director James Comey “I hope you can let (Flynn) go.”
Now, Trump’s lawyers are taking a different tack on Flynn. They want his credibility taken away, his testimony not heeded. Why? Because Robert Mueller successfully “flipped” Flynn into speaking against Trump.
The Washington Post is reporting that President Trump’s lawyers are preparing to cast former national security adviser Michael T. Flynn as a dishonest witness.
Flynn is trying to protect himself and is unlikely to tell the truth, they argue in preparatory notes and statements. There is still no official word on Flynn from Trump’s chief defender Ty Cobb.
Is Trump turning on a friend that even earlier this month, the President considering pardoning?
More exposition from WaPo:
The approach would mark a sharp break from Trump’s previously sympathetic posture toward Flynn, whom he called a “wonderful man” when Flynn was ousted from the White House in February. Earlier this month, the president did not rule out a possible pardon for Flynn, who is cooperating with special counsel Robert S. Mueller III’s investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 election.
Attorneys for Trump and his top advisers have privately expressed confidence that Flynn does not have any evidence that could implicate the president or his White House team. But since Flynn’s cooperation agreement with prosecutors was made public earlier this month, the administration has been strategizing how to neutralize him in case the former national security adviser does make any claims.
General Flynn has been implicated for potential collusion with the Russian government to elect Donald Trump in 2016. If there’s anything that will give rise to more “smoking gun” theories, it’s the idea that Flynn might give the goods to Mueller and make Trump culpable in an impeachable offense.
It might be why the President’s lawyers are trying to discredit him.
