President Donald Trump is seething privately, despite his rhetoric publicly, that he is concerned with Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation.
Specifically – according to one adviser’s account to the Washington Post, his thinking is that he doesn’t believe his son purposefully broke the law when he arranged the 2016 Trump Tower meeting with Russians promising dirt on Hillary Clinton, but that Trump Jr. might have something to fear legally speaking.
The adviser didn’t say much more as to why Trump thinks this but much reporting has already been done on this subject.
Fortune magazine put out a report that Trump and his son both would be at legal risk if found to be lying about the meeting.
And – the evidence out there so far is that they both lied about it.
It’s also reported that Michael Cohen got under Trump’s skin a few weeks ago when he revealed that President Trump knew about the Russian meeting the entire time, even before the meeting was scheduled. The two are now on the outs. Cohen and his wife felt like the president had abandoned him during all his legal woes.
Even with his long-time personal attorney admitting Trump knew, Trump is still denying it, and for good reason. While it’s no crime to lie to the public, Trump still has to worry about Mueller filing conspiracy charges.
I did NOT know of the meeting with my son, Don jr.,” Trump raged on Twitter, shortly after the news leaked.
But – President Trump’s knowledge of the incident aside, Trump Jr. could face charges of lying to Congress if Cohen’s allegations are proven to be true. Trump Jr. was the one who gave testimony under oath and would be guilty of perjury. President Trump has yet to agree to give testimony under oath even though he stated he would be willing to do so. Those discussions with Mueller’s team are still ongoing.
