President Donald Trump lashed out and berated Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen during a Cabinet meeting, multiple outlets are reporting.
Trump reportedly not only attacked her but took on the entire cabinet for sucking on the issue of illegal immigration on the border.
According to the Times, because of the public incident Nielsen has drafted a resignation letter but has not yet submitted it yet.
After the news hit the airwaves, a Department of Homeland Security official seemed to acknowledge the berating by ignoring that point and instead focusing on the accuracy of the resignation letter.
The spokesman said that part of the story was simply false. So, that must mean that President Trump going off on her in front of everyone at a cabinet meeting was true.
Trump has made illegal immigration and building a border wall one of his key campaign promises, but Congress has made things tough on him. Instead of approving him all the federal monies needed to build a wall, it allotted him just $1.6 billion, far less than the $25 billion he requested.
Trump thinks that his Cabinet should somehow make up for this shortfall in funding to get results.
On Monday, Attorney General Jeff Sessions was the first one to take initiative after that meeting and instituted a new zero tolerance policy that would punish parents crossing the border with their children. If captured by Border Patrol, the federal government has instructed that adults be sent to separate detention facilities, leaving their children, no matter how young, by themselves.
Sessions says this means the Trump administration means business.
“If you are smuggling a child then we will prosecute you, and that child will be separated from you as required by law. If you don’t like that, then don’t smuggle children over our border.”
