This One Tweet Sums Up Exactly How We Ended Up With Donald Trump

Ted Cruz is out. John Kasich is likely out. Everyone else dropped out a long time ago, and now we’re faced with the daunting prospect of Donald Trump as the GOP nominee. Some in the GOP are reeling, while others are cheering. Matt Walsh, of The Blaze, wrote a scathing indictment of the entire party for this, and now it’s like we have proof that the Republican Party really is the party of bigoted, hateful, racists, and one has to ask: Just how on Earth did we get here?

John Favreau explains it beautifully in one, single tweet:

It’s well known that Trump was one of the loudest birthers out there. He started in on whether Obama was actually a natural born citizen of the U.S. back in 2011, when he was contemplating running in the 2012 election. The birther movement had been underway for a while by that point, but he gave it a mouthpiece, and it burst into mainstream thinking when he started questioning Obama’s eligibility to be president.

He even announced that he’d sent private investigators to Hawaii to find out the truth. It was absurd. It was beyond absurd, and who knows if he actually did it or not, despite his claims that we wouldn’t believe what they were finding out there? But that was the claim, and the birther question became a major talking point for Mitt Romney and many others on the GOP side of things.

When President Obama made a trip to Kenya in 2015, Politico noted that, if the polls were correct, millions of Americans believed he was heading home. All of this fueled a belief on the right that President Obama is not really one of us, and Trump has spent a lot of time fanning that flame with things like the following:

“Radical Islamic terrorism. And I’ll tell you what, we have a president that refuses to use the term. He refuses to say it. There’s something going on with him that we don’t know about.”

“When will President Obama issue the words RADICAL ISLAMIC TERRORISM? He can’t say it, and unless he will, the problem will not be solved!”

And he continued to push the idea that Obama is not American, and millions fell in behind him. It’s a classic “us vs. them,” “if you’re not with us, you’re against us” argument. So how did we get here? A very insidious, very powerful lie that was given legitimacy by the liar of liars, who is now the Republican standard-bearer. Congratulations, GOP! May your fall be swift, and your death be quick.
