Donald Trump’s Really, Really Inappropriate Response To Orlando Mass Murder

If you've ever had any doubts that Trump and his followers weren't horrible, horrible people, here you go.

Most of America, and likely the world is in mourning on Sunday, following the worst mass shooting in the history of the country. Republicans, though, including Donald Trump, are not in mourning. Today, they are feeling smug. After all, the victims were gay and the shooter had a Muslim name.

Omar Mateen was born in New York. He was reportedly not very religious, but he did claim an affiliation with ISIS, although there was no evidence to support the claim, and he, according to his father, became upset when he saw men kissing. Mateen’s gun was also obtained legally. What this all means is that Trump’s wall or all the xenophobic isolationism in the world wouldn’t have prevented this shooting, because it came from an American citizen – a homophobic American citizen.

Trump, though, in his attempted condolences, ran a victory lap:

“Appreciate the congrats for being right on radical Islamic terrorism, I don’t want congrats, I want toughness & vigilance. We must be smart!”

That was the man running for president – the man attempting to become the world’s most important diplomat. Well, believe it or not, Trump’s awful, awful response seemed downright modest in comparison to what some of his supporters had to say about the shooting. For some of them, the fact that the shooting took place in a gay nightclub was perfect retribution for the victims’ godlessness.

Perhaps the worst came from Trump supporter and Texas Lt. Governor, Dan Patrick. The tweet has since been deleted, but not the record:

No matter what Trump and his followers say, Trump’s stated policies would not have prevented the horrific attack. As mentioned earlier, Mateen is American. The only borders he had to cross were right along our Atlantic Seaboard and his gun was legally obtained, just like the NRA and Trump want it. Now, we don’t know if Mateen was a Trump voter, but we do know that Trump’s entire campaign is about acting on fear and hatred. Trump is leading this country to its boiling point. It no longer matters if hate criminals scream Allah Akbar or Praise Jesus, Trump is telling the nation that it’s okay to express anger and hatred through violence. No, Trump didn’t cause this shooting, but these things happen when our nation’s leaders divide us instead of unite us.
